We live in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. The climate here is very pleasant and is usually very favourable for Bulldogs. However, when it is very hot they spend all of their time indoors.
We have been in B.C. for about 6 years now. Our household consists of me, Shawna, my husband, Bob and our daughter, Riley. In addition we have four adult dogs,, two cats, a a canary, a hamster and several fish. Needless to say, with a crew like that we are always busy with some pet related chore.
We do not have a kennel. Our "kennel" is our home. All of our pets have their place in our family. The new litters live in our home office until they are old enough to be introduced to the other dogs.
We spend a lot of our time together and do everything as a family. The endeavour to breed Bulldogs includes all of us and we each have our jobs to do to ensure that everything that needs to be done, gets done.
So you see there is a personal and emotional investment in these little guys. We are very proud to show them all off!
I have loved the English Bulldog since I can remember. I have adored their image in advertising and animation since I was a kid. However, my lifestyle and the homes that I have lived in have not always been favorable for the needs of a Bulldog. Anyone who has any exposure to this breed will tell you that they are unlike any other dog you may have ever known. It is absolutely essential that your home and lifestyle accommodate a Bulldogs needs or neither of you will be happy.
On April 21, 2006 my first bully arrived at the Vancouver Airport. I was so excited to meet her. She had already been named by our 7 year old daughter through a grueling "name in a hat" process. Delilah was a most welcome addition to our family. Delilah arrived safe and happy and was ready to play the moment we opened the crate door. We are so thankful to Kandie at Iroc Bulldogs for letting us have Delilah in our lives.
Now, the more I got to know Delilah, the more I knew that there was truly something very special about the English Bulldog breed. I liken them to a two year old child. They are curious, bold and very loving. Delilah loves to curl up on a lap in the evening when she is ready to call it a day. And even as she grew to 45 pounds, that didn't change!
Well, I have heard them say..."Bulldogs are like potato chips, you can't have just one". Nothing could be more true! Once you have these guys in your life, you want to be surrounded by them. And believe me, the Bulldog culture is alive and well! Any Bulldogger will say the same! Throughout the years that followed we added a number of new Bullies to our community at home. All of them are siblings and get along the way you would expect siblings to...having the odd disagreement over toys or a special morcel of food!!
I undertook to enter the show world with a male from Delilah's first litter - Domino (Onchu's Reach For The Top). The entire family enjoyed the show atmosphere and the "sport". And Domino really seemed to enjoy strutting his stuff on the runway. So...we're hooked.
The philosophy applied to the Onchu breeding program is simple - breed the "best to the best". It is important to consider the Bulldog Standard and to ensure that health issues are identified and avoided. I am very anxious to contribute to the health, longevity and strengthening of this wonderful breed.
And so Onchu Bulldogs is born. I have a great mentor in Kandie from Iroc Bulldogs as well as other Bulldoggers I have had the pleasure to cross paths with. I am a member in good standing with the Canadian Kennel Club and abide by their Breeder Code of Ethics.
If you are interested in being blessed by the addition of one of these great friends in your life my first suggestion to you is READ, READ, REA! There is a lot of information about them out there and if you cannot dedicate the time, energy and money to raising a happy and healthy Bulldog, you may want to reconsider. I invite you to browse the pages of my website and I will insert links for your convenience in an effort to help you get to know the English Bulldog. I invite comments and questions. We can all learn from each other.
Happy Bulldogging!!
